Principal's Corner

Welcome from the Principal

August 14, 2018

Dear Westport Heights Parents, Guardians, and Stakeholders:

As principal, it is truly my pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to you as we begin the 2018-2019 school year at Westport Heights Elementary School.

We have built a community within our school where students, teachers, staff, parents, and administration work together to provide an educational setting that is conducive to good learning and understanding. I am excited to share with you upcoming programs at Westport Heights this year like our continued partnerships with Playa Vista Elementary and LMU to incorporate Next Generation Science Standards in the classroom instructional program. Also, our dedicated staff has formed Professional Learning Communities to offer focused specialties such as Robotics, Coding, and Arts to our students! NEW for the 2018-2019 school year: Makerspace Lab for all of our students to experience innovation and engineering principals through collaborative creativity.  Otis School of Art & Design Creative Action collaboration for 4th and 5th grade. Vex-IQ Intra-Mural Robotics competition for 3rd - 5th grade.  And much more!

In addition to all of the good teaching and learning that takes place in our school, we also have a Positive Behavior Plan to foster positive relationships with a focus on our three School Rules (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe), our “Character Counts!” expectations, Restorative Justice pedagogy, and Bucket-filling socio-emotional activities.

We believe in keeping families informed. On the first day of school, students will bring home relevant information such as the Year-At-A-Glance Calendar and the Parent Student Handbook. Any updates and additional information will be sent to you through the weekly "Wednesday Folder" and will appear on our school website. Also, I am looking forward to meeting you at a monthly “Coffee with the Principal” to strengthen the community voice at WHES.

Prior to the start of the school, I sent out a three page document which outlined basic school structure, contact information, and our general school schedule. You will find it linked as the “Community Welcome Letter" on the front page of this website. Please note that every Wednesday there is early dismissal at 1:34 p.m.

To those students, parents, guardians, and staff who are new to Westport, we hope that you will quickly feel at home and become involved in the activities of our school through the Booster Parent Committee, Leadership Committee, School Site Council, Development Finance Parent Committee, School Parent Center and your child’s classroom program.

In closing, please know that my door is always open to hearing your comments, ideas, and concerns.  I look forward to working with you to create an exciting and informative school year together!

Warm Regards,

Jacqueline Hughes
